In 1959, a Danish police officer stopped traffic in order to let a young family of ducks across the road. Inspired by the newspaper photographs, Hans Bølling designed the duck and duckling figures to playfully commemorate the event. This duckling is handcrafted from teak wood.

He was high in the branches using the head of a push broom to dust the monument. Dusting seemed a thankless task in the desert, but Mike was really informative. The whole lot, which sold for $43,750, is appealing both as a curated assortment and a survey of modern design, comprising place settings from the likes of Jean Nouvel, Angelo Mangiarotti, Enzo Mari, Achille Castiglioni, and Josef Hoffmann. Moss relates the collection to salesmen's sample sets from the early 20th century. "I've never understood the 'rule' that everything on the table should match—certainly that is never the case with the guests (diversity is the norm when planning a good dinner party!)."
