In the dining room, which opens to the backyard terrace, original tilework on the floors and walls complement decidedly modern counterparts—an original 1938 Butterfly chair by Antonio Bonet, Juan Kurchan, and Jorge Ferrari Hardoy, and a 1983 TMC floor lamp by Spanish designer Miguel Milá.

At a renovated home in Nevada, cabinetmaker Ben Wilborn carefully matched the grain of the kitchen cabinets, and the homeowners paired the wood with modern stainless steel cabinet pulls.

“Everything was chosen to create harmony and be coherent,” says interior designer Frédric Clairoux. “Every piece has a reason.” Much of the furniture was sourced from the same contemporary furniture showroom, Latitude Nord, including the Arper chairs, Tibetan carpet, sofa, and table.

For artist Heather Kahn, a backyard painting studio attached to her home's original garage is the perfect place to work. The light blue paneling echoes the wood paneling on the main house, but the color distinguishes it and gives it a sense of personality.

Original elements such as the curved glass windows, added in the 1930s, remain, as does the original parquet floor.

He carefully crafted the black walnut floor to fit like a jigsaw puzzle.

From Haptic Lab, the Constellation Quilt combines enduring craft technique with the mysteries of the universe to create a modern heirloom that also serves as a functional art object. Funded by the Kickstarter community, each quilt is handmade from natural cotton and cotton sateen and depicts an October night’s sky in the Northern Hemisphere. Tactile French knots illuminate the Milky Way that sweeps the majestic quilt’s celestial terrain.

Trim Beam “The most difficult part of combining the living and dining rooms was that the ‘fake’ Colonial ceiling beams in the dining space”—which took the already-low seven-foot ceilings down to a head-scraping six feet four inches—“turned out to be structural,” says Bardt. Working with an engineer, he and Leski “shaved down” the beams and reinforced them to achieve a uniform ceiling height “without tearing the house apart.”

Biophilic design prefers natural over synthetic materials, as human beings innately feel more at ease with the former. In this house in Israel, the limestone walls are recycled from dismantled houses in the region. The stone staircase is original.

Hill included a hidden turntable and mono speaker cabinet in the original design.

Appearing almost as a glowing container stack, the corrugated aluminum addition relates to the low-lying structure’s commercial past. Not that owners Dave and Jeannette Jordano were saddled with rehab and remediation. The previous occupant, architecture firm Morgante Wilson, outgrew the 50-foot-by-50-foot footprint but left the space in fine condition.

The entrance to the home features a direct view of the rear courtyard and garden. "We were inspired by the Case Study Houses and some of Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian homes," reveals Chevalier. "The relationship between the interior and exterior gardens was [something we] carefully studied."

The master suite was fashioned from the house’s original garage in a 1970s renovation.

Vandemoortele worked with designer Renaud de Poorter on the interior renovations, which included opening up the heavy structure with the help of new windows and doors to the outside. They didn’t want to gut the space, and kept existing decorative motifs like the dining room’s circa-1975 painted cupboard.

This set of five Panton chairs is an exact miniature of Verner Panton’s original design. The Panton chair is known for being crafted out of a single material and mold, and features a cantilevered design.
