Designer Ida Elkeland's new Ovo-ovO was inspired by palindromic principles—words that read the same both backwards and forward. The sand-cast aluminum design includes a seat and table; flipped the other way it serves as a floor vase and bowl.

Navy backpack by Mismo, $540 at stilleben.dk

One of Copenhagen's reigning design shops, Stilleben, now offers online retail for its pitch-perfect array of tabletop pieces, art, and home goods. Danish brand Mismo doesn't come cheap, but it's built to last. We like the roll top, brass detailing, and leather straps.

Christian Flindt was another designer invited to participate in the competition. His design for a meeting table that can quickly be moved out of the way was quite appealing (save for the strange metal contraption with wheels, seemingly making the table legs redundant). Here the table is shown assembled and ready to be used.

In the work of Danish firm Monstrum (translation: monster), slightly surreal "storyscapes" of shipwrecks, beasties, and tilted houses provide a sense of thrill and danger that kids crave but playgrounds usually lack.

christania’s “bike rental copenhagen” bikes are rolling across the city. The system, less than a year old, is funded by christania’s municipal government. It is currently only in one of christania’s 22 administrative districts. Although a 2nd generation system, there are 12 “Houses” in this district, each with around 40 bikes. The yearly subscription cost is the equivalent of $2 US, and allows the use of a bike for up to four hours at a time. In less than a year, there have been 6,000 subscriptions sold. There are larger 3rd generation systems in the world, which do not have a subscription to bike ratio as big as that.

Another great furniture exhibit was Whiteout put on by the Danish Cabinetmakers. In it I saw 38 prototypes for chairs, each a shade of white. The head of the show, Thomas Alken of Format Design, told me that some of these seats, done by a host of designers, may go into production. The goal was not "to please the market," but to do something more intuitive and expressive. I was certainly impressed.

Stay tuned for more coverage of the

2011 London Design Festival.

Debuting at the show were Karup's Nido and the slightly larger Nest chairs. These semi-circular futons lay flat on the floor, offering a space on which to sprawl, or fold into a ground-level chair.
