Hardscaping a path to the rental unit enhanced by landscaping brought a warmth to the house that had previously been absent. A new air conditioning screen was built to allow for regular service without being an eyesore for the tenant or the neighbors.

Seating is noticeably absent from the interior, a conscious move. "The goal with this location was to provide epicurean-level coffee at a rate and speed that could meet the Financial District's demands," says Jones. "We did consider a much more standard layout, shrinking the back of house area and providing seating inside the cafe. We decided against it for several reasons, but mainly because we needed to accommodate more baristas to keep up with the pace of the area."

From Seattle–based design duo Iacoli & McAllister, the Hex Bottle Opener is machined from a solid hex bar to create an accessory absent of unnecessary adornments. The brushed brass opener has a metallic look that has been matte finished for an unobtrusive look. An ideal gift for a beer drinker with excellent taste, the Hex Bottle Opener is an attractive enough bar accessory that it can be left out on a counter or bar.

RB02 is a minimalist bench created by France-based designer Johan Viladrich. The RB02 bench is a brutal assemblage of materials held together with black rubber bands. With this seemingly improvised connection, aluminum plates, steel tubes and stainless steel rods are forming the fundamental structure of a bench. Here, as materials are stacked onto one another, the trace of the maker is absent, shaping and drawing are non-existent. Only a careful selection of materials, finishes and proportions remains, questioning the integrity of the bench as a complete object.

On Sunday, February 15, The Broad (pronounced: brode) museum’s top-floor, column-free gallery space welcomed Los Angeles artists, civic figures, and art enthusiasts for a one-day preview. Still absent from the space were its partition walls, which will display the personal collections of contemporary art of philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad when the museum opens in September 2015. For the day-into-night preview, The Broad presented Sky-lit: Volume, Light, and Sound, featuring the works of artists BJ Nilsen and Yann Novak. The artistic vision of the museum’s architects, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, also struck a chord with visitors.

Housing Complex TM is a minimal residence located in Niigata, Japan, designed by Schenk Hattori. This overall composition is an aesthetical machine that observes the co-existence of generations. As the architects remove small parts of the existing grown housing complex to divide it, the strong and heavy stone roof will always remain. In its symbolism and heritage value, it is able to cultivate the in-between of the houses as it defines a covered garden as a new collective element. In a first stage, a new single-family house has been built forming a new addition to the complex receiving its grammar from the existing surroundings. The house interprets the notion of assembling under a roof. The joinery of elements reminds of a traditional shoji sliding system, but its reinterpretation results in the existence of a triangular absent space. This is an enigmatic element that allows reconsidering the relationship between the inside and the outside, between the functional and the plain space to live.

BEDROOM
Strong retro sentiment, inhabiting elegant taste

Retro is a tribute, but also an innovation. Inspired by the retro complex, the design re-extracts the classic elements that have long been proven by time, familiar symbols, and re-describes them with modern strokes. The design does not interfere too much with the bedroom space, leaving a quiet atmosphere, yet winning in rhyme and foot. The carved plaster line sublimates the whole space with the precision of the details.

The block is the best way to create melody in a straightforward way. The mundane of life is punctuated by geometric forms, which clarify the function and harmonize the spirit. The ritual of art is not absent at all, with the taste of materials, the harmony of colors and the precision of details, together creating a tribute to the love of life. With such artisanal pavement, just a single cross-slanting branch effortlessly ignites a room full of vitality.

Even the smallest fragments of life are never neglected. The romantic sentiment of nostalgia combined with the needs of modern aesthetics allows the dimensions of time to be strung together one by one in the space, yet each expresses its own feelings. The casual tenderness of wood and fabric gives the most relaxing atmosphere for parents and children to spend time together, while the dryness of stone and mirror makes the tonality of life visible at a glance.
