Minimal interventions by architect Andrew Simpson allowed this former jam warehouse outside of Melbourne, Australia, to be turned into a family residence. "To draw light and ventilation into what was a poorly oriented and deep footprint, an extensive number of operable skylights were introduced on the north- and south-facing roof pitches, and a large void connecting the floors was strategically positioned to also take advantage of this amenity," Simpson says. American oak floorboards and Dulux paint were used throughout the property for continuity.

Remodeled by resident and interior decorator Jill McCoy and her husband David Hassall with the help of architect Paul Molina, the open-plan living space opens to a small outdoor area. French doors and a wall of windows bring in light. An Eames lounge chair and a Noguchi table add a modern sensibility.

Their dining room and sitting area used to be an uninsulated greenhouse; now it’s a light-filled space where the family gathers for meals at a weathered table and Åsa curls up on two custom daybeds, designed by Bjerre-Poulsen, to read and look at the garden.

“For me, an idea can come from anywhere,” says Tim, an artist who has an interest in product design, and often incorporates found items into his work. “I really enjoy the challenge of finding an object and responding to it.”

In the early stages of the addition concept process, Wibowo referred to a research publication from Australia, Dementia Care and the Built Environment, which underscores the importance of building a space that is as homelike as possible, with abundant light and many familiar objects in place. The architect accomplished this by creating custom shelving to hold ceramics that Ken made or collected over the years along with pieces by artist friends

To maintain a uniform look in the kitchen, Bjerre-Poulsen secreted most of the appliances, including the fridge, behind white Kvik cabinets. He installed can lights with brass-colored interiors on the ceiling; the halogen bulbs reflect the golden interior, giving off a warm glow. Every light in the house is an overbright fixture on a dimmer, for maximum flexibility—if you can adjust different levels for every situation, from working to entertaining, then you don’t need to rely on secondary floor or table lights, Bjerre-Poulsen points out.

The triple-glazed windows provide plenty of natural light.

A modern stone fence made of galvanized steel mesh filled with stones surrounds the house. “We got the stones from the local stonecutter—they use the stones washed up on the beach, not the stones from the fields,” Lassen explains.

A bridge connects the second-floor office and guest bedroom with the backyard-facing master bedroom. To prevent excessive solar heat gain in this especial space, Butler Armsden used high performance Unilux low-e windows. Two Eurofase pendant lights from Chromos illuminate the hallway at night.

This living room is filled with an array of plants that include a moss wall, an air plant wall, Staghorn Ferns, a variety of potted plants, hanging ceiling plants, and trees.

A row of clerestory windows run beneath the peaked ceiling in the kitchen, permitting natural light to bisect the heart of the home.

In the renovation of a 1950s building in Royan, France, interior designer Florence Deau selected a fleet of vintage and new furnishings.

The main living area is one of the owners’ favorite aspects of the home. A Malm fireplace, Eames lounge chair and ottoman, and Roll & Hill Excel floor lamp are sleek statement pieces, while the Ligne Roset Ottoman Series chairs add fun pops of color. The rug is from Design Within Reach.

The concave floor of the reading room also defines the shape of the library. Shielding the reading room from the street, it also opens the library up to the full-height window that occupies its rear façade. The library’s bookshelves were all custom built to accommodate voids for the studio’s windows and mirrors.

Henry, Moira, and Jack Tarmy (Brunswick, Maine) Many of the people she photographed lived in modern homes. “Most of the artists lean towards a modern aesthetic, but in New England, and Maine specifically, that usually comes with a focus on lots of natural light, windows without curtains, and a definite use of recycled/found materials,” she says.

Post Architecture designed this 1,800-square-foot home for two yoga studio owners in Toronto. A century-old coach house that formerly occupied the site was deemed to be in too poor shape to restore. Since the house is on a small lot—adjacent to the existing, main house—and close to its other neighbors, architect Gloria Apostolou devised a C-shaped structure that receives light from a south-facing courtyard, creating privacy in the other directions.

Deceptively simple in its form, the Revolution Glassware Collection from fferrone is creating using an intricate glassblowing process to combine two glasses into one. The result is a sleek and innovatively designed vessel that can be filled from either end. When filled, the contents appear to float, adding visual intrigue. Made from borosilicate glass, each item in the Revolution Collection is microwave and dishwasher safe. The collection includes a carafe, champagne flutes, wine and water glasses, liqueur glasses, and two bowls.

A comfy set of nine interlocking orange throw pillows from Roche Bobois fills the downstairs television room.

"The natural wax finish oak timber floor boards," write the architects, "create a soft and inviting sense of warmth within the space."

The resulting app and accompanying scale start with a recipe and serving size and then walk through the instructions as you add each component.

Both the platform couch and coffee table were crafted by Meredith while Mark created the wall art. The rug is a second hand store find while Stephanie Syms of Antipode Workshop sewed and screen printed the pillows. The ceramic skull is a work titled Olen Skull from Anyuta Gusakova.

Grind (Chicago, United States) This Chicago workspace shed the drop ceilings and depressing decorations of its former life as a title insurance company to blossom into a coworking hotspot. Benjamin Dyett, co-founder of Grind, which also runs similar spaces in New York, says his team wanted to create a “frictionless workspace” and built an array of desks and conference rooms to accommodate different work styles, all buffered by a sound attenuation system that improves focus. A 22-foot-high ceiling, massive windows and an internal mezzanine provide an airy, open environment, while custom light fixtures from Brooklyn’s MESH Architecture and a chandelier/art installation by RND, made of old phone receivers and staplers recovered from the office’s previous incarnation, provide visual inspiration when minds wander.
