In the renovation of their 1920s bungalow in Los Angeles, homeowners chose Mark Motonaga and Guy Clouse opted for Dawn Pink paint by Benjamin Moore in the main bedroom—even painting the ceiling for an enveloping effect.

The kitchen features a concrete island topped with marble. Deja-Vu stools by Naoto Fukasawa surround the island. A print by Guy Gormley, as well as a painting bought during holiday in St. Tropez, hang on the walls.

Preservation Props Since the house is in a historic district, Beebe and Skidmore’s interventions were constrained by local guidelines, including a stipulation that the walls of the addition couldn’t line up with the walls of the existing house. They bumped the walls in by five feet on either side and painted the addition, clad in siding from Capital Lumber, a color complementary to the original building’s deep, bright blue. “A guy from Boise’s preservation office came by and said, ‘This is a perfect example of how we’d like people to build additions,’” says Dana. “We were pretty proud of that.” beebeskidmore.com capital-lumber.com

Frances sourced all of the furniture, much of which is midcentury and restored or custom made. The dining table was a bespoke piece done in collaboration with Guy Eddington, a local furniture designer. The vintage Moller chairs were manufactured by TH Brown and restored by and purchased from Juliet's Balcony.

Since then, the Hudson Valley has seen a massage amount of development that caters to creatives seeking an inspirational refuge.

“Facebook Marketplace is pretty amazing for sourcing large furniture,” says Tiffany, who got her dining room table by trading it for a $20 houseplant. “I had seen it at really high-end vintage stores before for like $10,000 plus. It was in really rough shape and a guy was just trying to get rid of it. He was like, I'll trade you for a plant.”

Landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh, who has a house nearby, “worked with the nursery guy to do the landscape,” Toshiko Mori says, having two blueberry bushes moved closer in and grading the driveway for a diagonal approach to the main entry. “He loves the site and just took a personal interest—the effect is very subtle.”

Bruno is a clever and amiable spaniel in the prime of his life. He has a great capacity for fun and loves car trips and going new places. At home, this lovable guy has managed to negotiate four walks a day—he has an uncanny ability to convey his wishes. The Melbourne Victorian terrace house has undergone several layers of renovations. The most recent work incorporates the owner's desire to create a quiet refuge from busy working life.

Guy Katz from Caesarstone came to check on the installation and to clean up a small mark on a counter which developed during fabrication. Guy has an array of special restoration and cleaning products, and also expert knowledge of Caesarstone’s material properties.
