In the Roma district of Mexico City, Vertebral designed a four-unit apartment building that grants its residents access to verdant terraces.

New zoning allowed for a zero-lot-line structure, but required a public storefront, which Carpenter uses as an art gallery.

Lightroom 1.0, a photography studio, is a freestanding structure on the property. “Together, they represent an autobiography of my career,” Carpenter says.

Another 20 loft homes are available in the concrete building starting on the second floor. These spacious residences will feature wide white oak flooring, along with restored concrete beams and columns.

The two tiny homes were designed by CAST Architecture.

Plans for 168 Plymouth Street in DUMBO, Brooklyn, are comprised of two interconnected buildings that once served as a factory and distribution center for Masury & Sons Paint Works. Sales are now open for a mix of converted townhomes and lofts, as well as modern penthouses.

Located in Northeast Portland on a 0.12-acre lot, the well-preserved home is clad in board-and-batten cedar siding.

One of the building challenges was transportation through the steep and windy roads to the isolated site, which is 0.5km away from Cornwall, one of Connecticut's smallest towns.

Architect William Carpenter, glimpsed in his second-floor design studio, built Lightroom 2.0 to sit unobtrusively among its 1920s neighbors in Decatur.

The main bathroom, with a prominently placed soaking tub, is a restorative haven within the home. "My favorite part [of the home] is the bathtub, which has a clerestory window of the downtown skyline, and another window that looks out to see the Hollywood sign in the distance," shares Melanie. The luminous space features ceramic floor tile from Ceramic Technics in Ecco Mineral Stone 2.0, Wilsonart quartz counters in Rio Upano, and a white LED sconce by StudioM. The white oak vanity was custom designed by OPEN For Humans.

Carpenter kicks back on an IKEA outdoor sectional on the sealed-pine roof deck of Lightroom 2.0. A collection of vintage Tulip armchairs by Eero Saarinen surround a “Jetsons-inspired” fireplace from the 1970s found online.

The low-mass structure enables the house to warm up quickly in winter, and the geometric, concrete mass that wraps around a log burner helps moderate internal temperatures. Low-0energy fittings and north-facing photovoltaic cells enhance energy efficiency.

Located close to Spitafields and Brick Lane, the newly opened Leman Locke offers 168 boutique serviced apartment-style hotel rooms that come with a lounge and dining area and a kitchenette complete with washing machine, oven and dishwasher.

William Ultrasonic Humidifier by Stadler Form, $168 The William will fill a space of up to 1,000 square feet with lung-friendly humid air. Inside, its automatic cleaning system keeps mold from forming.

The Weltys separated the kitchen/dining area from the living room with a stair framed by maple slats. The treads, made from leftover maple countertop pieces, are set into a steel framework. The staircase cost $2,204 for 168 square feet of material in total.

The roughly 160-square-foot modules, dubbed Mini House 2.0, were built in collaboration with Swedish manufacturer Sommarnöjen, and are delivered flat-packed. The homes are painted wood, and include a shaded deck space, plus full insulation and electricity, for a price of about $29,000. The modules come in various layouts, and can be configured and combined to include a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and living space.

Amsterdam architect Pieter Weijnen first discovered charred wood through the work of Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori. He later traveled to the Japanese island of Naoshima to observe the traditional technique. When he returned to Amsterdam, he did some DIY wood charring for sidings and ceiling panels for own passive home – House 2.0.

The property's 0.39 acres is surrounded by a metal fence.
