JG Domestic (Philadelphia, Pennslyvania)

Located adjacent to Philadelphia’s bustling 30th Street Train Station, JG Domestic could have easily felt like an extension of the frenetic commuter hub. Instead, the mood inside is positively bucolic. A “living wall” of vegetation, plaid, striped, and burlap seating, and shelves lined with farmhouse trinkets lend the space tranquility. The lights on top of the shelves are custom by Créme.

University of Oregon Hatfield-Dowlin Complex (ZGF Architects: 2013)

Architect Gene Sandoval and the rest of the design team created this futuristic athletic complex to create a structure centered around the players, not the fans. This new home for the Oregon Ducks football team incorporated the firm’s various disciplines to create a space scaled to football-player dimensions (note the larger entryways and hallways). The textured glass facade, detached from the building envelope, reduces glare inside, where players often spend hours studying film.

The John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes in Eugene, Oregon. Designed by ZGF Architects LLP. Winner of the 2011 Institute Honor Award for Interior Architecture. Project description: "The Jaqua Center explores the limits of transparency and connectivity to provide student-athletes a place to gather as a community focused on study and learning. The building incorporates a range of learning environments, from small spaces for individual tutorials to a large 150-seat auditorium. The challenge of creating a tranquil environment where students feel connected to natural landscape elements and daylight was heightened by the chosen location: a busy intersection between campus and the city of Eugene, on the site of a former parking lot at one of the major campus entrances."

Current owners melded their former dwelling’s period furnishings—an L. & J.G. Stickley settee at right, William Morris attributed chair, and Handel lamp—with their new setting. AIA summary: "Rising 23 stories above the intersection of Twelfth and Washington streets in Southwest Portland, Twelve|West is a mixed-use building designed with sustainability and ongoing learning as integral goals. Twelve|West was designed to achieve the highest levels of urban sustainability, and is expected to earn a Platinum rating under LEED NC overall and LEED CI for the office floors. An emphasis was put on selecting low-impact materials, including salvage, reclaimed and FSC-certified wood. Much of the concrete building structure is exposed on the interior minimizing the use of finish material and providing ample thermal mass. Energy use reduction was a primary driver of the design. Simulations predict energy savings of 45% over a baseline code building."
