Mazza and Patten both used off-the-shelf Ikea cabinets in their kitchens. They customized them by raising them up a few inches and dropping a sink into a store-bought table, which serves as the countertop. The pair is thrilled with the results. Even the architects they hired to work at the deli from Grupo 7 were impressed: “They said, ‘These cabinets are insane. How do we get them?’” Mazza recalls.

While not quite as surrealistic as Dali’s clocks, this Dada Clock recalls the essence of dadaism—newness, modernity and iconoclasm. Designed by Tahmineh Javanbakht, the oblong-shaped enclosure magnifies and distorts an original Artecnica watch face.

I guess the Roman bath was quite a hit with Dali—here's a photograph of the artist, enjoying the space with two young friends. Didier and Martine Haspeslagh offered an impressive collection of jewelry made by famous artists from Calder to Braque to Dali, and it is unsurprising that this booth contained some of the more remarkable pieces I saw.

Mazza and Patten applied for a grant to fund the roll-up garage door that opens onto the street, allowing patrons to dine en plein air despite zoning restrictions on sidewalk tables. They received $20,000, and though it didn’t cover the full cost of the door, it went miles in differentiating the deli’s facade from the surrounding block.

In Hangzhou, China, Shanghai-based XL-Muse designed the Zhongshuge bookstore with forest-like rows of vertical circular book shelves, and ceilings covered with mirrors that make the vertical shelves look much longer than they really are, and give a reading hall, a dream-like, Dali-esque quality.

Our first stop of the day was El Palace Barcelona, a stately old structure built in 1919 as one of Spain's first Ritz hotels. We visited the Salvador Dali Suite, and where we were told he partied like a rock star for months at a time, even bringing a horse into the room at one point (don't ask).

21C Museum Hotel, Cincinnati, Ohio Named due to its proximity to the Contemporary Arts Center and Aronoff Center for the Arts in Cincinnati, 21C—designed by Deborah Berke—reflects a variety of artistic movements with Dali-esque chairs and pop art colors. It is located in the Metropole building, a local landmark built in 1912 and restored as part of its latest transformation.

Inside the Dali Suite, there's a Roman bath that's original to the building. I've never seen anything like it—you can fill it up with water and make a little mini swimming pool. The hotel director said that the bath alcove had been boarded up for several decades, and they weren't even aware that it was there. All of the tile was in excellent condition, even though it's over ninety years old.
