Architect Alex Gil and his wife, Claudia DeSimio, affixed a 750-square-foot addition to the roof of a 19th-century Williamsburg townhouse, transforming their cramped third-floor apartment into a modern duplex. The original fireplace remains, but has been stripped down to exposed brick, as have the surrounding walls, creating an almost wainscot-like design of exposed brick with flat white drywall above.

Israeli architect Pitsou Kedem’s striking family home comprises two concrete squares—one stacked on top of the other—on a sloping 7,750-square-foot plot. Inside, sections of the silicate-brick walls have circular holes cut out from them in order to connect the various rooms visually. A long, thin skylight above the stairwell floods the home with sunshine.

This artist’s studio was created out of two bays on the second floor of a former warehouse. Sliding and pivoting 9’x9’ wall panels run adjacent to the large central wood beam and allow the 3,750 square-foot space to be reconfigured as needed. A "working wall" runs the entire length of the south wall, pulling away from the exterior wall in one area to provide space for a utility room and bathroom. A new steel stair was inserted to connect the ground floor to the studio and up to a small roof deck. A skylight tops the stairwell to bring daylight into the studio and down to the entrance. The building’s history and its uses remain evident in the patina of the floors which were simply cleaned rather than resurfaced. Photo by Benjamin Benschneider.

Backyard excavation created a sunken courtyard, where the side entrance to a new 750-square-foot office space lies. The exterior is clad in Corian, a surface normally found on countertops. "The clients love that they can go to another wing of the house and have an office," says Brooks. "There's a physical seperation. We’ve designed it so in the future, if they close the firm, they can open up the door between the office and the dining room and connect the entire basement floor."
