The basic requirements of a good stocking stuffer are: portable size, ingenuity, and of course, the fun factor. This brightly-colored universal adapter from Flight 001 satisfies all three. ($25)

Shown with the simple Drop cap Pendant, the Plumen 001 is the original energy-saving bulb from Plumen. The bulb’s dynamic design mimics the filament found in incandescent bulbs, but its glass, sculptural silhouette makes the bulb look more elegant than traditional bulbs and standard CFLs. The Plumen 001 has a screw fitting that fits into any lamp that accommodates a standard screw bulb.

Belgian studio Ateliers J&J exhibited furniture and shelving with an industrial aesthetic.

Intended for a much bigger room in the family’s previous home, the bed was designed by Hill and is covered in Maharam fabric in a doily print called Intricate 001 Charcoal. The side tables are from West Elm, and the AJ table lamp is by Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen.

A social creature who seems to know everyone, Loft J occupant Jamil Malone has hosted several "alcohol-themed" parties and manages to wedge as many as 20 people into his studio. The gatherings are like gallery openings, with the walls of Malone's apartment displaying a roving selection of locally produced art.

Hans J. Wegner Wishbone Chairs surround the large dining table on axis with the grand, exterior windows.

In addition to signs, Rose documents storefronts, like J. Braun Liquors in New York City. "Julius Braun was a Jewish immigrant who arrived in the United States from Poland with his family in 1921," he writes. "He was only seven years old at the time. City records indicate that the neon signage was installed in 1952. When Mr. Braun passed away in 1995, the store was sold to new owners who, despite changing the business name to ‘Uptown Wine Shop’, never updated the signage out front. No complaints here."

The Metropol Parasol by J. Mayer is an undulating structure made mostly of wood that twists and turns over a public square in Seville, Spain.

The dining table and storage system were made by the clients' good friend, Anthony Zollo of Studio Zollo. The dining chairs are Fredericia's J39 chair by Borge Mogensen.

A built-in banquette with a custom table designed by Engelsman saves space. The bench has a cushion made by Caroline and the chairs are Vintage J.L. Moller Model #75 Dining Chairs. A partial wall now separates the adjacent den and TV room, to balance connection and separation.

He’s also the author of Drawing from Practice: Architects and the Meaning of Freehand (Routledge Press, 2015). Reporting on this minimal North Carolina home for the May 2015 issue, he discovered ample evidence of modern and traditional Raleigh homes living side-by-side, gracefully. Favorite American architect: “Jefferson, for making Palladio the American standard of greatness, and Sullivan, for creating an original American architecture.”

In the dining room, Wishbone chairs by Hans J. Wegner surround a 195 Naan table by Piero Lissoni.

The dwelling showcases the designer’s collection of Danish chairs and loungers from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s — including pieces designed by Kofod Larsen, J.L Moller, Harry Ostergaard, Bruno Mathsson, and Hans J. Wegner.
