Ethan Schussler built his first tree house at 12 years old. His tree house in Sandpoint, Idaho, sits 30 feet above the ground and can be accessed by an "elevator" consisting of a bicycle that, when pedaled, ascends a pulley system to the top.

A ribbon-like spiral staircase leads from the open-plan living area to the second level, where the bedrooms are located.

The extensive use of natural wood on nearly every surface makes the inside of The Barn feel like an extension of the landscape outside.

The interior features two lofts: an 8'x10' platform with the main bed and a 8'x4' area often used for reflective recreation.

The home is made of 42 unique cross-laminated timber panels. The smallest panel is 450 millimeters x 1500 millimeters, and the largest panel is the entire southern wall—14.4 meters x 2.3 meters. The cantilevered ground floor at the rear of the home was made possible by the strength of these panels.

The crumbling stone walls of a 17th-century farmhouse in the remote countryside of Dumfries, Scotland, presented a unique renovation opportunity for Lily Jencks Studio and Nathanael Dorent Architecture, the teams behind this project. The curved blue kitchen larder has a projecting “nose” that illuminates the worktop and a mirrored eye that “winks” each time the door is opened.

A mosaic tile wall softens the laboratory-like effect of the glossy kitchen cabinets.

The design team restored the existing wood beams, giving nod to the home’s former rustic life, while introducing big windows, white walls, and clean lines.

The green backsplash tiles are vintage, reclaimed from another project.
