American designer George Nelson created everyday objects including lamps, clocks, and accessories with the mission of bringing modern design into American homes in the 1950s. Nelson worked with Vitra to create a variety of wall clocks, including the Sunburst Clock, rendered here in multi-color. The Nelson clock is an iconic emblem of midcentury design.

Working with a construction budget of $165 per square foot, the architecture firm accommodated three bedrooms and two bathrooms in each of the designs and sought to instill the spaces with the elements not typically associated with affordable housing. "With good, thoughtful design, this category of residences does not have to have an expected, underwhelming look," Michael Lehrer, the firm's president and founder, says. "Just call it gracious housing with emblems of luxury: ample natural light; views; generous indoor-outdoor relationships; processional spaces; and an open, trusting, and welcoming attitude to the street."

Saarinen’s parents, Eliel Saarinen and textile designer Loja Saarinen, immigrated to the United States in 1923 and settled in Michigan, where Eliel helped found the Cranbrook Academy for the Arts. Eero, who worked there as a student apprentice, struck up a friendship with Charles Eames, whom he would collaborate with to develop molded plywood furniture. While Eero’s legacy mostly springs from his playful building designs, his furniture work, like the Womb chair (still in production by Knoll), were emblems of modern design, so much so, that the Coca-Cola company used the image of a tired Santa slumped on one of these curvaceous chairs.
