Slotted between the street-side enclosure and the living area is a breezy second-floor terrace. Brise soleil slats shade the interior. Yatabe’s steel fabrication company created the robust, trusslike armature that extends from the house to support the deck and facade.

Kuan Wong, (center) joins several other gardeners as they work at the Brooks Park Community Garden on Tuesday Dec. 17, 2013, in San Francisco, Ca. In the quiet Oceanside neighborhood, on the western side of San Francisco, are two acres of open land on Brotherhood Way. Peter Vaernet has a mission: to turn the plot into the city's next thriving urban farm. Back in the 1980s, Vaernet and his neighbors led the revitalization of nearby Brooks Park and installed a small community garden there. It's so successful that Vaernet doesn't see why a bigger one on Brotherhood Way wouldn't take off, too. The need for fresh, organic fruits and vegetables is great, he says, since the area lacks major grocery stores and the elderly immigrants who reside there have a hard time driving to the closest ones.

SORI YANAGI DESIGN MUSEUM
Location: Tokyo
Architects: You Jin, Bo Feng
Project Time: Dec.9.2010
Competition

Imbedded within Japanese culture is the concept of the "no-touch? No buildings in Tokyo touch each other, as code requires the slimmest slice (one meter) of space between objects in the built environment. This project takes this concept and cuts it into the architecture itself creating an in between within. The cut or slice was the organizing gesture of this project, at once violent and definitive.

The Volume remains cubic while the building behind undulates back and forth, meeting flush at the temporary exhibition level and then peeling back in. At first glance, the skin looks relentlessly cellular but it is also made up with a secondary texture of tiny slices that scale, fold and open at different programmatic locations. The scaling effect challenges the ides of texture as something of this size becomes an architectural object.
