A Seattle family tasked Atmosphere Design Build with creating a sustainable dwelling in Nevada City, California, the matriarch's hometown and a historic mining community. The firm's material-driven approach channels the pioneer spirit of the gold rush, without compromising comfort or high-efficiency standards.

The stunning outdoor poolside terrace leads to a 360-degree view.

The arrangement of windows in the home creates a play of light and shadow and allows the family to experience different views as they move around the space. “It’s about creating a calm, comfortable home that is still dynamic,” says architect Line Solgaard. “There are 360-degree views but you don’t see in every direction at all times—there are moments of drama throughout.”

The roof boasts an observation deck with 360-degree views towards the Hudson River.

This month sees the release of a new comprehensive monograph on Spin, the British graphic design studio founded in 1992 by husband-and-wife duo Tony Brook and Patricia Finegan. Working with clients ranging from London's Design Museum, to Whitechapel Gallery, Nike, and the Crafts Council, the studio also produces its own independent projects. Among these are Unit Editions, which published this new monograph. Specializing in graphic and visual culture, the press was cofounded in 2009 by Brook and Adrian Shaughnessy.

Here, a sampling of its titles from 2011 to 2014 include a book on iconic 1970s designer Herb Lubalin, and compendiums on subjects including identity design, supergraphics, and more.

For a self-directed project in 2014, called "Inventory," Spin made icons of everyday projects used daily in the studio.

The idea for these compliment slips and tape rolls, designed this year for furniture designer Simon Pengelly, came from the graphic stripes on the edge of the plywood used to make one of his chairs.

For the new identity Spin designed for the University of the Creative Arts this year, the studio drew upon rectangular letterforms with striped patterns in varying densities. The numerals, shown at left, have been used on the school's sports jerseys.

Abstracted, colorful shapes make up the visual identity Spin designed in 2013 for AGI Open, an annual conference hosted by Alliance Graphique Internationale. In addition to leading its branding, Spin and its co-founder, Tony Brook, organized the conference that year.

Among Spin's cultural clients has been Fundación Proa, an art institution in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Here, two identities they designed for exhibitions in 2013 and 2015 make use clean-lined, geometric typography.

Units of 360-square-feet in size or less in size can be ordered as ANSI-certified mobile models for an additional $5K to $10k.

Designed and built by Oakland–based O2 Treehouse, the Pinecone is a five-and-a-half-ton geodesic home that can be installed in the forest or in your own backyard. The treehouse, accessed via a wood ladder and a trap door, is constructed from steel, wood, and glass that integrates into the forest canopy. Inside, 64 diamond-shaped windows provide 360-degree views of the surrounding forest or landscape. Even the floors are composed of transparent panels—enhancing the sensation of floating above the earth.

Each porch has two exposures. Although they’re located on opposite ends of the home, the two porches offer a combined 360-degree view of the forest beyond.
