In Washington’s Methow Valley, a modern cabin with an outdoor living room allows views of the surrounding woodland and meadow to perforate its volume.
By day, the Chechaquo Lot 6 cabin gives the impression of floating in a forest clearing; by night, its windows glow against the wooded darkness. From all vantage points, the landscape permeates this 1,000-square-foot cabin, designed for two outdoor enthusiasts and tucked at the toe of a dramatic slope in Winthrop, Washington.

I decided the best course of action for this windowless basement was to lean into the darkness. Rather than fight it, we embraced it. Handcrafted wood paneling concealed a door and helped the TV blend seamlessly into the space. A custom-designed entertainment console beneath the TV was created to mimic the custom fluted wood paneling on the walls.

The Bright Side Light by Artecnica has a beautiful message. Inscribed with the phrase "light without darkness," this lamp is certainly illuminating.

Lighting is a huge part of the design. The main consideration is to focus on features that you want to accentuate while letting the less important features fade into the darkness.

“It needed to be a sleeping niche that could become very dark,” says Pulcrano of the bedroom. A porthole window offers light when desired, and curtains encircle two sides for when it’s time to create total darkness.

•Not everyone is comfortable with darkness, or rather doesn't understand darkness...

Darkness is the only thing which lets the lights glow in all its glamour... The two are inseparable...

The terrace garden is a playground for the shadows in the morning and the lights at night •

Flik Flak is a minimal lamp created by Stockholm-based designers Snøhetta. Snøhetta has designed its very first lamp collection, Flik Flak, in close collaboration with the Swedish lighting company, ateljé Lyktan. Initially developed as prototypes for The 7th room at Treehotel in Harad’s in Northern Sweden, the collection comprises a wall-mounted lamp, a table lamp and a floor lamp. The collection plays on distinctive contrasts between light and dark, inside and outside. While the wooden exterior surface is treated with black coloring, reflecting the idea of darkness, the wooden inside of the lamp has kept its natural, light color, diffusing the warm light by dimmable LED strips.
