Connected panels of molded polyester fiber, covered with fabric, make up the sound-absorbing Bits wall by Abstracta. The triangular shape of the panels helps break the sound waves, making the design ideal for an office environment.

Mint green-painted ironwork and tiles connect the indoors to the outside more fluidly.

The Max-A studio is also built with a pine frame, though it has pine panelling on the ceiling, while the main house ceiling is painted a warm white.

Ethan Schussler built his first tree house at 12 years old. His tree house in Sandpoint, Idaho, sits 30 feet above the ground and can be accessed by an "elevator" consisting of a bicycle that, when pedaled, ascends a pulley system to the top.

Built in the early 1970s, the house's kitchen, living, and dining areas were originally divided into three distinct zones. In order for this great room to flow as one, Klopf Architecture removed the glass doors and solid walls separating the enclosed atrium from the kitchen and living room. A Herman Miller trade poster, Design Within Reach book tower, and IKEA sofa mingle in the space.

Located in Aarhus, Denmark, Villa R is a minimalist, serene structure clad in zinc panels. "The objective was to create a house that brings the forest inside through large glass panels—and create an ever-changing seasonal backdrop for the interior living spaces," stated the architecture firm, C.F. Møller, of the 3,200-square-foot abode.

Having found a 100-acre farm in Ontario featuring rolling corn fields, the residents asked architect Cindy Rendely to design a place that was "comfortable and modern and appropriate for the country." Though technically all one space, the living room, dining room, and kitchen are separated by the double-sided fireplace.

Highland Park Ford Plant, Highland Park, Michigan (1910)The Highland Park Ford Plant, designed by Albert Kahn, was the first so-called daylight factory, and the birthplace of the moving assembly line. Created for Henry Ford, who ceaselessly refined his process of efficiency in an effort to save unneeded motion, the building's natural light and improved air quality was a boon to Ford's workers' quality of life (and productivity). Over the course of the next 30 years, Ford and Kahn's collaboration yielded 1,000 factory buildings, setting a pattern for American industrial architecture.

Six-year-old twins Nicolas and Constanza use Pentimento as their “little battleground,” says Pasternak. “They have some options here that they will not find anywhere else.” Among those options are a climbing wall offering easy access to the roof.
