When designer Ona Villier and her husband, a professor of finance, moved into their early 20th century home in Wilmette, Illinois, they immediately fell in love with the Modernist stained glass windows found throughout the kitchen and living areas.

Transplants from Spain and Italy, respectively, the couple was drawn to the home’s open and airy floor plan and envisioned a kitchen renovation that mimicked the style of apartments one would find in Barcelona, many of which, Villier says “have been tastefully updated for comfort while keeping their original design details and charm.”

Built in 1913, the five-bedroom home was a great candidate for the couple to construct what they love most about the Spanish dwellings — a juxtaposition of classic architecture with a modern and sleek interior design. As a designer, it was important that the house offered space for Villier to play with new ideas while maintaining a comfortable home for her family. With two young children and a love for cooking, the kitchen was at the center of the renovation. A palette of black, white, and bronze details accentuate the couple’s vision of a practical space — one that is luminous, minimalist in style, and aesthetically interesting.

To achieve their conceptualized kitchen, the couple opted for a combination of the Helene and K105 collections by Italian company Zecchinon, with cabinetry in white, a kitchen island in black, and drawers in dark grey. Following the same design philosophy employed in the kitchen, the couple made minimal changes throughout the rest of the home, allowing its vintage details to coexist harmoniously with its updated design.
