Villa Maati is envisioned as a relaxing sanctuary in the midst of a coconut farm in the outskirts of Bangalore. The client dreamt of an ecologically sensitive countryside home and how they imagined their family & friends from all over the world would experience it.
The habitable spaces have been dispersed between the existing Chikoo & Mango tree creating courts & pathways surrounding a pool. This retreat consists of an entertainment zone with kitchen, dining & living. A residential zone with rooms arranged around the pool in two levels with careful articulation of volumes and spatial relationships. The expansive front patio facing the pool of this villa residence allows the family to take in the views, entertain guests, and enjoy the outdoors year-round.

The living room facade has fully expandable fenestrations allowing seamless integration between indoors & outdoors. The semi open connections passively cool the structure throughout the day. There’s shadow play from the trees and the natural granite stairs cantilevered from the mud wall, and it creates different moods over the course of the day, depending on the time of year.

Large boulders found in & around the site have been placed strategically in landscaped pockets, to create a feeling of permanence. The intent was to create spaces that seemed like they have evolved in the existing landscape.

Its aesthetics is understated yet striking with use of natural materials like stabilised mud blocks, mud plaster, Mangalore tiles, wood, local sadarahalli & Kota. The common areas are paved with locally sourced Sadarahalli which continues as interactive seating at various levels.

Varied pastel tones of lime oxide walls in each of the guest bedrooms effortlessly harmonise with the minimalistic & timeless spaces. All the guest washrooms have sunbathed landscape to blur the limits between indoors & outdoors.

Here architecture finds a contemporary language to traditional building materials.

The client's collection of heirloom quality furniture has been repurposed to complement the new custom designed modern furniture.

The profound stillness of the pool & surrounding landscape of this Villa becomes a perfect setting for renewed spirits.
