TINY LOT, BIG FAMILY HOME

This house was built on one of the smallest lots in San Francisco, measuring just 25' deep and 55' across. Despite the postage-stamp lot, the 4-story house has 2,500 square feet of living space with 4 bedrooms on the top two floors, a living/dining/kitchen floor that opens via a bi-fold door to a small garden and a guest room suite on the basement level. The top floor master bedroom suite is surrounded by a deck that offers views from Cole Valley to Ashbury Heights and beyond. For the exterior, a mix of concrete, steel and wood gives the house presence while the interior is rendered throughout in white with light wood floors and a dramatic floating wood staircase with floor-to-ceiling glass walls at each floor level as it ascends through the house. Overall, simple detailing, both inside and out, gives a sleek modern feeling, but the scale of the spaces gives the house an intimacy that serves this young family of four well.
