After years of living in Toronto, my wife Kim and I returned to my hometown and decided to put down some roots in small town Callander. In 2019, we bought my grandparents lakeside cottage which was built in 1959. The cottage overlooks Callander Bay, on Lake Nipissing.

The cottage was a time-capsule. It was untouched since 1970s, with the same shag carpet and wood paneling.

We started the renovation the first day we took possession, and there were many surprises along the way, including: squirrels, bats, and shoe boxes for insulation.

The renovation was truly a family effort. Kim and I designed the layout and styling. My mom, Susan, made the stained glass panels. And my dad, Don, did all the carpentry work and has all the know-how to take on a big renovation like this.

(Fun fact: the pre-renovation photo was the first kitchen he ever built, back in 1980. 40 years later he made this kitchen for us).

The Idea:
Our goal was to create a modern cottage. A cozy, 1500 sq.ft. space for us to live, work and entertain friends on the weekends.

The most dramatic transformation was the main level. We were able to open up the space — the main floor went from 5 rooms to 1 main room that is now an open-concept kitchen, living room and dining room. It is this bright, main floor space that opens up to a deck with views of Callander Bay.

We sourced the red and white pine wood ceilings and floors from our local lumber mill. And spent time in search for the right stain that would keep the wood light and natural, without the yellowing effect of typical pine. All the cabinetry is made of maple and hickory. The countertop is leathered granite.

Kim and I had recently returned from a trip to Japan, and drew much inspiration from our travels when we designed the kitchen. We decided on an asymmetrical design with the shelf and transom window, balancing out the wall of cabinetry. The shelf also served as a great opportunity to display our collection of Japanese pottery.

The renovation is still a work in progress — we have just a few small rooms left to complete.
