Walking into this little home just puts you in the best mood - the energy here is palpable, and the light trickling in can't be beat. It truly is an oasis and piece of history in the middle of a city.

I talk all the time about this idea of simple luxury - it’s a concept I apply to my style of dressing, the way I eat and cook for others, and which can be seen throughout the house. In the bathroom, I added a top of the line Toto toilet and sink, which is contrasted against the original stone and tarnished unlacquered brass door knobs. That mixture of old and new (especially when it contributes to a more sustainable way of living - in this case less water usage), is what it's all about.

This Vintage 1970s Oil Painting, sourced via @homesteez in nearby Escondido, is such a quintessential piece for San Diego. While I can’t (yet) surf, I love how this painting greets guests and nods to a classic surf shack.

I’ve always been drawn to small ‘ homes with an old soul', in this case 540 sq feet to be exact. Homes with character and imperfections - spaces with a story to tell. When I first laid eyes on this tiny little 1920s craftsman bungalow listed one morning last fall (with a single blurry exterior photo) - I pounced. Things have flowed ever since.

On the second week of renovations, as I was surveying exterior repairs, an elderly woman shouted over the front gate. Long story short, she had been close friends with the two older gentlemen who had lived in the bungalow together for years, had moved away, and just happened to be back in town. She shared some of the memories they had had together in the house - and actually said to me as she was walking away ‘this house has an incredibly special energy’. To this day, that is such a special memory to me - I hope I’m always fortunate enough to know the history of the homes, and the people that have loved them before me, that I take on the responsibility of caring for.

The 'Bungalow on Thorn' as I have come to call it, is small, unassuming, clad in redwood siding, and full of charm. It's imperfect, and I'm excited to share it with more of the community through various initiatives in the coming year.
