In 2022, my wife and I purchased a property in the Hocking Hills region of Ohio which contained two off-grid cabins: an a-frame and a log cabin. The cabins shared 26 acres that borders Zaleski State Forest. A portion of the property was surface mined many years ago and now contains a variety of Eastern Pine and maple trees. We are working to plant additional trees on the property to restore it to it natural beauty.

We began by focusing on the a-frame. We added utilities (electric, septic, well water), and renovated the interior. This was the first time that we ever had to figure out how to install utilities on a property. I completely the rest of the work myself, traveling to the cabin on the weekends for several months. The a-frame was completed by August 2023 and we now use it as a family getaway (my wife, 8 year old daughter, and I) and also rent it as short term rental.

We are now turning our attention to the log cabin, which consists of three log cabins built in the 1800s that were deconstructed from their original locations in Ohio and then reassembled by the original owner of the cabin. This cabin is also off-grid, so we are now working to get the utilities installed.

The cabins are a short drive to major attractions such as Ash Cave and Lake Hope.

We believe that we have a nice story to share about how working families can find a way to have their own getaway if they put in their own sweat equity.

Thanks for your time!
