This 540-square-foot, one-bedroom loft in a century-old, seven-story, building is located on Montreal's main drive. Built in 1911 as a textile-mill and now mixed-use, the Chicago-School inspired building houses residents as well as artist, musician, designer and maker studios. This local landmark has ground-floor retail, including a popular canteen for new-media types.
The slab-to-slab renovation exposed the slatted motif of the 12-foot ceiling's formwork. The impressions of the stringers set the tone. The new floors echo the ceiling's colour and orientation. The kitchen's exposed-concrete-look backsplash (not pictured) and dark grey mill-work help support the monochromatic theme.
Enveloped in grey, the interior's divisions define a compact bedroom and a spacious bathroom. Two oversized, floor-to-ceiling, custom doors on centre pivots sit in a track and rotate for privacy or stack against the wall for spaciousness.
