Our clients came to us with various scenarios for how they wanted to use their apartment in a Brooklyn brownstone built in 1901– from a separate rental unit, a home office to an integrated apartment for long-term family stays. Flexibility was critical. Compact and efficient was essential. Ease of use for varying ages and needs was fundamental.
The existing ground floor apartment was divided into two main areas – the large, sun lit living room was open and expansive with historical details almost overwhelming the space. The rear of the apartment had been renovated in the early ‘90s into a series of small, adhoc rooms in a confusing layout with no historical detail. The renovation respectfully refinished the historic details of the front living area, while muting the extensive woodpaneling for a more modern feel. The space offered the large sliding pocket doors to provide connectivity to the upper floors or the privacy needed as an independent apartment. The rear of the apartment was gutted, removing the small confining rooms to create a large open, light filled space with a custom “Swiss Army knife” cabinet – a white oak desk for the home office, a clean minimal murphy bed with integrated night stands and storage folds out into their bedroom. A quarter sawn white oak wood screen allows light and privacy to the office space. Tucked in the corner is a small dining banquette with storage below.
