Moving away from ornament and instead toward an emphasis on interior space with articulated sections, Schindler ushered in a new wave of architecture that embodied radical spatial ideas. Here in the hills above Silver Lake, the McAlmon Guest House is a prime example of his use of three-dimensional form. Inside, thoughtful window placement floods living spaces with natural light, and warm wood floors contrast with crisp white walls. Original details have been preserved, like the brick fireplace that anchors the living room, with a restored antique stove and vintage light fixtures and hardware throughout. A respectful renovation by the current owner includes a complete historic re-creation of the bathroom. The stand-alone single-family home is separated from the main residence by a privacy fence surrounding a secluded garden terrace, lending an intimate and quiet ambiance. One garage and one driveway space are included in the rental, with plenty of street parking for guests. Close to restaurants like Little Pine and Blair's, the shops on Rowena, plus Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.
