This new 4200 sf modern residence sits (conspicuously) on a quiet block in Old Greenwich. Unlike the classic, neighboring capes and colonials this house is asymetrical with plenty of rich detail and varying materials (wood, limestone, stucco and concrete). Originally conceived as a modular, factory built residence by Labhaus (labhaus.com) the client hired Sellars Lathrop to create design development and construction drawings for an exterior and interior design, plus pool and landscape features, all site- built by local contractors. The process became somewhat design- build with owner and architect collaborating on purchasing, specifying products, creating mockups, developing details, meeting on site with subs and craftsmen. We believe this local , design build type process is what helped SLA and the owner achieve the ultimate design goals.
The exterior is clad with western red cedar, stucco and Jerusalem limestone panels . The windows are covered with mahogany vertical slat privacy screens. A 10 ft high pivot entry door with a "smart glass" sidelight leads into spaces with high ceilings and large triple glazed euro-type windows and sliding doors. The rooms are simple, open plan and zen -like , reflecting the owners experiences living in Japan. The entry foyer leads to a traditional tatami room on the left and directly ahead is a three story steel and glass stairwell with floating walkway. The kitchen , dining and family room are combined, partially separated by an concrete tiled, 2-sided gas fireplace. The public rooms at rear of house lead to a partially covered IPE deck with steps leading a pool and Japanese garden.
