Mulberry St. House

Feeling stuck in the research and development stage of a lighting project, I needed to get out of the studio and work on a more expansive and well-defined challenge. The complete overhaul of a derelict duplex that had set vacant for 17 years into a modern single family home seemed like just the thing. A few months earlier I had befriended an architect who was also at a turning point, leaving a large firm to strike out on his own. Our conversations about space, craftsmanship, and detail informed my examination and re-imagining of the house.
Interested in both modern design and historic preservation, I originally intended to keep as much of the original exterior as possible, but a hopelessly sinking chimney led to a more modern reinterpretation of the home’s main entry with a flat roof that mirrored the existing carport. Enclosing the front porch with cedar screening created a private outdoor space with easy access to the public areas of the house while also concealing the odd second front door, now known as the friend door. The completely new floor plan was designed within the constraints of the existing footprint.
