This Santa Barbara home was designed as a companion unit in the backyard of an existing beach house. The living area takes full advantage of the pleasant, Southern Californian climate by opening up to the adjacent garden space. The design palette, comprised of warm stone, white stucco, and natural white oak, feels right at home in the Santa Barbara Mesa. The large stone mass evokes an old-world nostalgia; it's as if a stone structure had been there before the rest of the home. The corrugated metal roof appears as a bridge over the glass between the stone structure and the stucco walls of the home.

The project is a testament to family collaboration and creative thinking. The Architect, Nate Nicodemus, designed the home for his sister and brother-in-law. The home sits on a multi-generational property; the lot is shared with another home that is occupied by the elder generation. As a general contractor, Nate's brother-in-law was able to build the house himself.
