The Margala House is a perfect blend of minimalism, heritage, and respect for the land’s history, designed with an emphasis on tranquility and harmony. After years of family vacations in Hawaii, this couple, now empty nesters, sought a home that would not only reflect their love for the islands but also honor their Indian roots. The couple, minimalists at heart, envisioned a space that was simple yet soulful, resonating with a calming energy while integrating the principles of Vastu Shastra—a centuries-old Indian architectural system based on the alignment of natural forces.

The selected site, though initially barren, held a deep connection to the island's past, with remnants of a forgotten structure and scattered kiawe trees, the remnants of what was once a lush grove. The design team uncovered that ancient lava flows had once traversed the land, creating a natural path from the mountain (mauka) to the ocean (makai). This historical element played a key role in shaping the architecture of the home, ensuring that the design echoed the past while remaining contemporary and respectful to the site’s natural forces.

The architecture is centered around a meandering pathway and a serene water feature that leads to a secluded lanai—an open-air pavilion that serves as the home's entryway and symbolic heart. This transition space, away from the world’s busyness, brings a sense of calm as it opens into the peaceful interior. The form and simplicity of the structures were inspired by the agrarian buildings that once populated the area. The minimalist design contrasts beautifully with the natural, undulating landscape and the breathtaking coastline views.

Inside, the design follows the same restraint, with a color palette reflecting the earthy tones of the surrounding landscape. The muted colors inside allow the beauty of nature to remain the focal point, without competing for attention. The structure itself is perched lightly above the land, integrated harmoniously with the lava rock and grasses below, a visual representation of the ancient lava flow that once ran through the area.

In terms of sustainability and comfort, the residence was strategically oriented to take advantage of the island’s natural cooling winds, maximizing ventilation and reducing the need for artificial cooling. Deep overhangs shield the home from the intense sun, reducing heat gain and further promoting energy efficiency. The presence of nearby kiawe trees, which fell during a storm, became a part of the design as they were repurposed into functional outdoor elements like steps and seating around an outdoor firepit.

The landscape design worked to restore the land to its natural state, with thoughtful plantings and the strategic planting of additional kiawe trees that mirror the ancient lava flow. The landscaping incorporated drought-resistant species, avoiding the need for irrigation while also emphasizing the importance of creating a cohesive relationship between the natural environment and the built space. The untouched lava rock scattered throughout the site remains preserved, serving as a reminder of the powerful forces of nature that shaped the land.

The result is a home that feels timeless, soulful, and perfectly aligned with the history of the land and the natural beauty of Hawaii, creating a serene retreat for its owners to enjoy for years to come.
