The Maple Rock Residence is a Northwest contemporary home built for entertaining and showcasing the homeowners’ extensive art collection. SEA listened carefully to our client's vision for their future lifestyle and performed multiple space planning studies as part of the process. A gallery-like aesthetic and a focus on indoor-outdoor integration are the pervasive elements in SEA’s design and serve in creating a functional and beautiful forever home for our clients.
An early challenge that we encountered was the steep slope of the site — from the road to the opposite end of the site, the grade change is more than 20 feet. Remaining in this neighborhood was important to our client, and the site offered incredible views of the Coastal Range along with several mature trees, so we knew our design needed to work with the slope.
The interior of the home is open, bright, and facilitates entertaining. The main level opens from the foyer into a large great room that is complete with a two-story flamed granite fireplace, custom built-in shelving, and a 40-foot-wide sliding door that connects the interior space with the patio. The second story of the home has a bedroom wing and an office wing connected by a bridge element.
Throughout the entire home, special consideration was given as to how our clients’ extensive art collection would be displayed. The design balances the need for walls from which to hang art with the desire to have bright, open spaces. We also considered how light, both sun and artificial, would impact the art and worked closely with our lighting consultant to develop solutions.
The exterior of the Maple Rock Residence exhibits contrasting elements and nods to a Japanese aesthetic. The house is clad in western red cedar with a moody black finish. Vertical warm-toned wood slats create visual interest and offer privacy while still allowing natural light in.
