This crowded three-bedroom apartment was remade for an NYC artist into a lively one-bedroom “spaceship,” in the words of the designer. The razor-sharp, streamlined lines, combined with classic and modern fixtures and finishes, has a far-out impact.

The Marmoleum flooring—which must be installed on a perfectly flat substrate in order to make the seams invisible—is an economical and resilient choice. It contrasts nicely with design classics such as the Charlotte Perriand sconces and Vitsoe suspended millwork.

Automotive vinyl—the kind that is used to wrap city buses in advertisements—was employed in select locations in place of wallpaper or paint. The material lends the gold sliding door and pink plaid bathroom, for instance, a character and sheen that is subtly otherworldly.
