Good bones made for a sublime transformation at this modest mid-century ranch home on a leafy street in Mt. Lebanon. The Lightbox house reimagines the original structure with a striking glass-front addition and a custom backyard pergola, proving that thoughtful renovation can elevate existing homes to meet modern living standards while preserving their character and structural integrity.
At the heart of the design is a bold glass addition that replaces the original brick façade facing the street. This light-filled volume creates a striking contrast to the existing home, now painted white to harmonize with sleek wood and glass tones. Despite the challenge of a restrictive 16-foot front setback, the addition makes efficient use of space, introducing tall ceilings and an abundance of natural light. The result is a renewed curb appeal and a spacious, inviting interior that replaces the home’s once-dark and cramped living room.
The transformation continues outdoors, where a custom-designed pergola activates the backyard. This multifunctional space offers shaded lounge and dining areas, complete with a built-in fireplace, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection that enhances the home’s livability year-round.
Innovation and craftsmanship define every detail of the project. Composite wood siding features bent, biscuit-glued corners for a flawless, miter-free finish, while handcrafted interior casework was precisely stained to complement the home’s modern aesthetic. These meticulous details exemplify the project’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and sustainable renovation.
Lightbox demonstrates the immense potential of renovating older homes. Rather than demolishing and starting anew, this approach preserves the integrity of the original structure while transforming it into a contemporary architectural statement. By addressing spatial, structural, and zoning constraints with creativity and precision, the project proves that existing homes can be reimagined to meet the needs of today’s homeowners—while respecting their history and context.
