An adaptive kitchen and workspace renovation for an inspiring activist and longtime community organizer in Detroit. The owner spends most of her time in her compact kitchen, whether she is cooking or making phone calls to recruit volunteers and reach out to other activists. The design balances several uses into a flexible space while highlighting and presenting artifacts and views from in and around the house. We brought together the Arts and Crafts neighborhood history, Curiosity Cabinets, a reinterpretation of William Morris patterning, and a contemporary sense of materiality. The cabinets are sourced from a single ash tree, with a unique white wash applied to reduce the yellow color. The cabinet fronts have a CNC milled floral pattern over a white background The cabinet pulls are hand-crafted cast iron mushrooms And of course, we created a space for her cats!
