Lurking behind a suburban fence in a rather polite neighborhood, this residential
remodel – aka the Black Mamba – hides in plain sight. An existing, somewhat forlorn mid-century rancher is reimagined through a series of small but significant interventions. Walls were taken down, window openings enlarged and roof lines carefully altered, breathing new life into the home that comfortably accommodates a 21st century family of four.
Avoiding the ‘McMansion’ syndrome, the Mamba is a modest home that takes advantage of a temperate climate that life on the Peninsula affords. Radiant heating, the use of cross-ventilation and a house automation system makes for a comfortable year-round house
Butt-glazed corners enlarge interior spaces visually along the diagonal, and large sliding doors blur the boundary between inside and out. Newly milled cedar siding of various widths and face finishes was stained a uniform black, providing a backdrop that helps celebrate the colors of the existing landscape.
An outdoor pool cabana for relaxing California style completes the composition.
