Studio Schicketanz, an award-winning, integrated practice led by Mary Ann Schicketanz, is known for its stunning, coastal architecture and interiors that celebrate all things California. For the firm’s latest signature project, they tackled a full-scope renovation of mid-century modernist Henry Hill’s former personal residence. English-born and Harvard-trained, the well-respected architect known for his work during the post-war period, was one of the trendsetters of California Modernism within the Bay Area.

In an effort to preserve the architectural integrity of the important, local landmark, while also attending to the current owners' needs, the team embarked on the design and structural considerations of this highly unique project by implementing informed interventions. For example, throughout the investigative design process, Mary Ann uncovered the various changes that Henry Hill himself carried out, which resulted in a layered complex that was built—and tinkered with—slowly over time. Thus, the team implemented necessary material and code upgrades to bring the building to current performance standards, while also inserting new program elements to maximize the home’s existing functional potential.

Though the original building envelope was maintained, the team thoroughly improved the interior circulation, as well as individual rooms with carefully considered material finishes and lighting. The result are subtly rich interiors that showcase an array of modern touches by the likes of Ann Sacks, BlueStar, Caesarstone, Grohe, Heath Ceramics, Liebherr, Miele, Rugs by Christopher Farr, Sozo Studios, and more.
