In returning to their hometown to raise a family, our clients sought to create a new modern home that would be an inviting and spacious gathering place for extended family. Connection to the outdoors and room to play was high on the list for this athletic crew.
We designed an 8,000 square foot house, on a gently sloping, three-acre lot adjacent to a golf course. A series of individual volumes gives the large house an intimate scale. Two simple gabled pavilions are connected in the center by a glass-walled cube containing the large family room in a double-height space. Daylight permeates the house via the glass cube and other transparent elements.
The house is long on its east-west axis to enjoy solar gain in winter. The primary rooms are on the south side, to take advantage of the solar orientation and views of the yard, pool, and sport court. Glazing is set back from the southern façade or shaded for protection from the higher summer sun. The property’s specimen trees were preserved. A ground-source heat pump provides sustainable heating and cooling. Materials were chosen for long life with minimal maintenance, ensuring the family’s long enjoyment of their new home.
