The original floor plan, delivered by the construction company for this 70m2 apartment, served as a blank canvas for this challenging project: that of designing a home and workspace for a young creative couple.
The task was taken on by the duo of architects Débora Feistauer and Taís Nicolacópulos, of Bloco Z Arquitetura, with offices in Porto Alegre and Florianópolis, Brazil.

The premise of the project was to value the lack of walls between the bedrooms and the living area, creating a fully integrated environment which would allow the seamless proliferation of ideas of its inhabitants. The owners are a young creative couple: he is an illustrator and tattoo artist and she is a fashion designer.

In order to allow for privacy, and the closing of the couple's bedroom, when necessary, a custom retractable wood panel was designed and installed. A second modular area, houses the fashion studio which can also become a guestroom. In this space, mobile metal framed panels were created to showcase an indoor vertical garden, adding a layer of visual protection for the room. These panels also allow for the display of the couple’s artwork.

Alongside this natural green screen, sits a large workbench where the clients create their artwork.

The two mobile dividers, idealized by the architects, enable four different apartment configurations: allowing the couple to share the spaces of the bedroom and studio; the living room and studio; divide the three rooms into separate living areas; or, to unite all areas, allowing for circulation throughout the apartment in one open space.

The relaxed color palette: having grey as the primary wall color, offset by wooden details, enabled the exploration of bolder colors in the furnishings, the fixtures, the accents, the vegetation, and in the clients’ personal art collection. Examples of this can be seen in the use of bright colors in the kitchen cabinetry and in the daring two-hue bathroom. The color black, also makes strong statement in the guest bathroom.
The result of the project veers away from the obvious, setting any sobriety aside, and filling the eyes of all who enter the apartment, and the minds of those who live in it, with ideas.
