Daredzhani: A Contemporary Homage to Georgian Tradition
Nestled within the vibrant Mega Silk Way shopping center in Astana, Kazakhstan, Daredzhani is more than just a restaurant—it is an immersive exploration of Georgian culture and tradition. Designed by ABR, the 2,400-square-foot space seamlessly blends historical motifs with contemporary sensibilities, offering guests an environment that reflects the warmth and conviviality of Georgian hospitality.
A Design Rooted in Heritage
The interior design of Daredzhani is deeply inspired by the communal spirit of traditional Georgian feasts, where food and storytelling intertwine. Every element of the space has been meticulously curated to evoke a sense of authenticity while embracing modern functionality. Locally crafted wall panels, custom furniture, and open kitchen shelving introduce artisanal craftsmanship, while European-sourced seating adds a refined contrast to the rustic charm.
A key architectural feature is the pair of striking cross-vaulted ceilings, entirely adorned with hand-painted murals. These intricate frescoes depict a phoenix—symbolizing renewal—and celestial motifs inspired by the zodiac, reinforcing the cyclical nature of time and tradition.
Overcoming Design Challenges
Transforming the space presented several challenges. Originally a large, open-plan venue with soaring ceilings but no natural light—common in shopping malls—the team had to rethink the lighting scheme entirely. The cold, sterile illumination of the mall was replaced with a layered lighting approach, incorporating warm, localized lighting that highlights seating areas and decorative elements, creating an inviting, intimate ambiance.
Another significant challenge was the asymmetry of the structural layout. To counterbalance this, the team introduced the dramatic vaulted ceilings, which not only corrected spatial imbalances but also became a defining visual element of the restaurant.
Craftsmanship and Materiality
A commitment to craftsmanship is evident throughout Daredzhani. Custom decorative wall panels, large-scale furniture, and open kitchen shelving were handcrafted by artisans in Astana and Almaty, adhering to the project’s bespoke design specifications. The dining tables were sourced from a Russian manufacturer, while the chairs were imported from Europe, ensuring a fusion of global quality and local artistry.
Artistry extends beyond furnishings, as the walls and ceilings feature extensive hand-painted murals. To streamline the execution, portions of the artwork were pre-painted on canvases before being transferred to the restaurant, allowing for both precision and efficiency.
The spatial configuration of Daredzhani was carefully orchestrated to accommodate both communal gatherings and intimate dining experiences. Large tables encourage the convivial nature of Georgian feasts, while more secluded seating options provide privacy without disrupting the overall openness of the design.
The vaulted ceilings serve a dual purpose: aesthetically, they introduce a sense of grandeur; functionally, they aid in spatial zoning, subtly demarcating different dining areas. The interplay of symmetry and asymmetry, light and shadow, tradition and modernity, defines the unique character of Daredzhani, making it a destination where design and culture converge harmoniously.
By embracing the essence of Georgian heritage while integrating contemporary design solutions, Daredzhani offers a sensory and architectural journey—one that transforms dining into an experience of storytelling, artistry, and timeless hospitality.
