Katharina Klugg is a Cambridge based Ceramic Artist, as a potter, she values space and spent years wishing for a larger area. When she and her partner started searching for a new home, their goal was to find a property with enough room for her studio.

After years of looking, they discovered an 80s-built house by Ivor Richards, with mid-century design features and a garden large enough to accommodate Katharina’s dream studio.

With the help of Okopod, a local business specialising in green, prefabricated buildings, the couple designed a space that complements their home. The final build showcases cutting-edge design principles, combining sustainable techniques with a sleek, contemporary aesthetic.

The studio is designed to maximise natural light and uses eco-friendly insulation materials, prioritising wood over concrete. To preserve the mature trees on-site, it was built on piles, allowing the tree roots to thrive while supporting the structure. The exterior is clad in Grandis with shadow gap detailing.

Katharina’s studio merges innovative design with environmental sensitivity, demonstrating the potential of sustainable building practices.
