Calm House
by Mateus Monteiro
Calm House was created to fulfill a family desire to have a summer house in their hometown which, possibly, will be their official residence in the future. With the premise of a contemporary and minimalist project, the client, a Mining Engineer, brought the fascination for concrete as a central request among the materials.
A lot of landscaping and a kitchen surrounded by plants were also requests from the residents.
Given these requests, Mateus Monteiro, the architect, says he seeks to get closer to the clients, in order to be able to create a more functional project that fulfills desires and dreams, while also being a house that really meets the family routine and becomes a complete experience.
As the client is brother to the architect, the project was even more personalized and exciting. Mined pieces brought references of Ouro Preto, the couple’s favorite city. Pictures of the city — made by Z. Zurika —, wood, soapstone and ceramic vases contextualized the whole.
In the entrance hall we already find a photo of the Ouro Preto college and then, next to a Mole armchair of Sérgio Rodrigues, a picture of the ceiling of one of the churches completes the tribute to the city.
The facade of the house brings the soapstone as a reference, with stripes made with the jet technique (brushed). The living area has concrete on the floor and ceiling, surrounded by ripped wooden panels that create the feeling of welcome and comfort.
At requested by the resident, the kitchen brings a beautiful garden around it. The intimate area is private, with French windows, a revamp from Minas Gerais to bring the landscaping into the hallway. In the master suite, the soapstone is once again evident in a tub carved especially for the couple.
The house was designed so all environments allow the contemplation of the garden, with landscaping signed by Flávia D´Urso. The entire social area reflects the residents’ preferences, with apparent concrete and a special lighting project to value the details.
The pool, all coated with soapstone, is surrounded by the landscaping in evidence and a staircase, with many ceramic vases, leads to the level below the pool, the fire pit area, where there is a built-in fireplace.
The sensitivity in the choices makes this summer house a place that feeds the desire to come back and stay.
