Simple, yet sophisticated and rustic off-grid living is encapsulated in this rural Vermont fishing retreat. A contemporary aesthetic with the warmth of a cabin.
A large overhead door allows for visual and auditory delight of the forest and nearby river to dance through the combined living, dining area, and kitchen space. The cabin has one bedroom with a full bath and a loft space for additional sleeping or storage. The contrast between the traditional warmth and solidity of the interior's exposed rough sawn wood framing, and the extensive use of large glazing gives this "cabin" a handsome yet beautifully open character.
Due to the remote location and not able to use heavy equipment or machinery, it is panelized construction perched on concrete piers complimented by a dark gray bonderized steel sheltering shed roof. Electricity is provided by a bank of car batteries charged by a solar photovoltaic system. The client requested primarily wood construction which lends itself to be visually and acoustically quieter and more flexible in the cold temperatures of Vermont winters. The interior wood has been lightly whitewashed contrasting the steel and aluminum framing of the windows and steel hearth and fireplace surround. The exterior vertical shiplap hemlock siding will gradually weather to be congruent with the gray of the forest trees surrounding it.
A local species of brown trout is crafted into the cedar shingles that adorn the interior of the chimney mass, a nod to the owner’s love of fly fishing.
