From Water and Earth Landscape Design

This new construction property in Northern California, built in 2019/2020 was looking for a backyard space to match the style of the home. The client wished to have a modern space to relax with family and friends including a swimming pool, outdoor kitchen, outdoor lounge area as well as a putting green. There were several obstacles that needed to be designed around with this project. Most notably, the large tree in the middle of the backyard, the cul-de-sac directly behind the back fence, utility lines as well as neighbors whose property lines were very close.

From the beginning, the best location for the swimming pool was identified as on the left side of the yard. The setback, the space was tight for the filter equipment of the pool so we designed a feature wall to not only has a water feature but also to hide the unsightly equipment. We wanted to have a clean design and it was important to bring in some contrasting colors that would look good against the pool. We decided to have a tanning deck on one side of the pool as well as a lounging deck on the opposite side both made of Ipe lumber. The lounging deck extends to cover the base of the tree to make the space usable.

Continuing down the lounging deck, the client has a board formed fire pit, dining area and just one step off of the deck I three hole putting green. The outdoor kitchen off of the house serves as a quick access point for outdoor dining or indoor dining.
