Broad Street Renovation

Tucked in the heart of Stonington Borough, the living spaces of this otherwise charming Federal home were closed off from one another, and the poor circulation between rooms didn’t reflect the way modern families now live.
For this renovation project, Stonington-based architect Julia Leeming focused on creating openings that would transform the back-of-house spaces into more functional living spaces and improve the flow throughout the entire first floor. She connected the dining room and kitchen by removing the wall between them and reconfigured the kitchen layout for better flow between the cooking and entertainment spaces. By taking advantage of the natural light and view from the patio doors, the new layout creates an airy, light-filled kitchen perfect for hosting both inside and out.
Leeming borrowed space from an oversized utility room to design a fanciful powder room that connects from the living room to a laundry alcove and then back to the kitchen, eliminating any dead ends in the first-floor circulation. Outside the powder room, she added a custom mudroom cabinet where the family and their guests can hang up their coats before following the family dog into the kitchen.
