Before & After: Spanish Revival Home Renovation

Detached family homes with panoramic ocean views are scarce. When designer Song Gao was asked by the new owner of a neglected classic home to transform it for contemporary use, she adopted sustainable design approaches to rethink contemporary urban living.
“I want to preserve the Spanish Revival architectural characters as the design was the preferred style of buildings in the Monterey Heights neighborhood, however, I think the interior should take advantage of the western exposure to achieve a free flow openness, with more natural light more suitable for the current lifestyle”.
Removing some of the existing walls between the living, dining and kitchen was key to transforming the main floor into a continuous living area with a grand opening onto a IPE wood deck framed with a large bi-folding door extending the living area from inside to the outside. Walls were removed from the original confined central stairway, making it an open stair, allowing it to become an art gallery.
Song, the designer was able to capture underutilized storage space in the basement level and convert 1200 sf into a wet bar, family room/entertainment den. A high ceiling and a split-level design allows access to the lowest level deck terracing onto the open yard.
