In 2019, the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar, a beacon for one of the pivotal art and design institutions of the 20th century, marked its centenary. In commemoration of this historic event, the Bauhaus Museum Weimar unveiled its doors, displaying the most ancient Bauhaus collection globally.

The museum itself is an architectural marvel, and so is its museum store, a brainchild of the esteemed architect and designer Felix Schwake. Schwake, who believes that "architecture should serve as a backdrop for life," was tasked with devising a space that both pays tribute to Bauhaus's legacy and is pragmatic in its daily functions.

A key obstacle during the design phase was the absence of a conventional storage area, a staple for retail spaces. This necessitated a forward-thinking, design-centric solution. Schwake ingeniously turned this challenge on its head by crafting design structures that are visually captivating and simultaneously provide essential storage. This inventive approach integrates storage right within the exhibit area, transforming a potential limitation into the store's core design principle, facilitating easy replenishment of stock.

The store adopts an adaptable spatial design, enabling varying product displays day by day. Moveable platforms spotlight the merchandise while fulfilling storage needs. Additionally, the shelving units come with transparent rear panels that can be adjusted to act as protective display units, ensuring added security for premium items.

This distinctive design approach was co-created with the Museum Store's overseer, Mr. von Keyserlingk, a writer and renowned speaker with expertise in retail dynamics. The design effortlessly melds with the museum's existing ambiance, adding a unique design flavor.

This harmonious blend of artistry, utility, and homage to the Bauhaus legacy led the Bauhaus Museum Store in Weimar to clinch the German Design Award under the Excellent Architecture segment.
