Love is a confusing emotion! But its power to beget the most surprising outcomes can always be counted upon. Askim, a residential interior design created by AVG Architects also banks upon such uninhibited emotions for its design inspiration. Etymologized from a Turkish word which when roughly translated in English means ‘my love’ or ‘my darling’, significant aspects of this project : from its flow of spaces to the choice of palette; communicates a semblance of affection and passion.
Being a prolific Urdu poet and an educator, the client had a coherent idea of the artistic tale her home should narrate : love in artistry! Her requests revolved around the usage of elements that should be handpicked with intention and facets which are universal while possessing a personal touch. With our teams’ conjoint design sensibilities; we settled to instill a delicate Turkish details, motifs, hues that reflected an exotic vibe of passion; and blended the same with occasional aspects of modernism. Thus, an eclectic melange was created that catered to the artistic, the traditionalist and the modernist segments of our soul!
A splash of blue, a vibrant couch and delicate patterns in the milieu of serene whites of the Living Room; is the first frame that greets the imminent user to this humble abode. While the classic rounded arch in a turquoise blue niche, is a direct link to the Turkish concept, the furnishings chosen for this space present a more blended ideology; completed in a neat circle with the tomb shaped pendant lighting. At its opposite end this living room of this project, also employs the innocence of white as a background to partner the bashful teal couch; while a curvilinear coffee table seamlessly balances the arch. Altogether they form a homogenous medley that is chic yet bears a strong character.
The living room gives way to the dining as well as a flight of communicative staircase to the basement floor. For the dining area, we sought to create a more amalgamated look. While the muted toned dining setup and the central lighting feature speak a contemporary language, the louvered wooden partition with its pops of lively chrome instill a more traditional aura. Beyond this intricately crafted wooden partition, a flat topped arch poses an entry to the kitchen. Complementary to the living, the kitchen also sports turquoise blue cabinets and an array of classically inclined tiles. Paving way into the son’s and guest bedroom through the dining, the user is met with an aptly compliant subtle yet vintage vibe, prevalent in the rest of the design. Bold colors are the soul of a well blended traditionalist design that also aims to please the contemporary mind. Therefore, vibrancy of a tangerine hue has been used to interact with the blue - green royalist, while wooden textures have been metamorphosed to create the son’s vivid bedroom.
Opposite to these spaces, the living also perches into the master bedroom. The walls of this bedroom, being at par with the eclectic concept of Askim, adorn a majestic cobalt blue tint in combination with a fluted white arch. Further, the golden ochre velvet headrest provides a zing of color and seamlessly converges with the natural wooden textures. Shifting focus to a more private zone; the bathroom area also does not fail to disappoint with its Turkish love affair and charm! A pointed arched niche featuring an array of intricate blue tiles, also replicated in the shower cubicle, instills this bathroom with a traditional vibe balanced with subtle wooden cabinets and white sanitary ware.
In order to avoid a sense of complete monotonous void, a long stretch of artistic blue tiles were spanned across the entrance foyer and dining to remain at par with the eclectic theme as well provide an elevated sense of spatial volume. To elevate this space a bit more, two varied consoles : one with a rather simple and crisp design, housing some fine semi circular motifs; and the later featuring black frames and fluted glass have been incorporated.
Perching forward, a series of steps lead the way to the lower ground floor. Intricate tiles and patterns render this flight of stairs with a baroque and eclectic charm, congruent with the core concept of this project. Owing to its smaller square footage, this floor houses only a family lounge and a study room. Although the study does not brag but simply speaks of working ethics and functionality, contrarily the lounge celebrates alluring shades of pinks and florals through its soft furnishings.
Promptly entitled by our client, every element of Askim reflects affection and love warmth. The design aims to personify itself with the hues of intimacy and fondness, into a living breathing manifestation of a passionate lover!
