Grunwald is one of Poznan’s most beautiful neighborhoods. Here, architectural studio LBWA designed an apartment in an old townhome surrounded by quiet streets and beautiful gardens.
Immediately at the beginning of the project, the architects recognized a great potential of this old place with amazing natural light and original parquets.
One of the first exciting challenges was changing entirely the floor plan with a goal to make it more functional. Originally, the apartment was divided into two large rooms, a bathroom, and a kitchen.
Architects used an open floor concept, moving the placement of the kitchen and combining it with the living room. The arrangement helped to create additional space for a walking closet and a separate room that could be used as a home office (as per investor’s request)
Architects wanted to capture a beautiful light coming to the apartment from the south and amazing view on greenery surrounding the building. With that in mind, they crated a bedroom closely attached to the living room and separated partially by a glass divider. For more privacy they added soft curtains that could separate two spaces but thanks to the amazing lightening the entire space looks almost better undivided, creating a unique look and specious feeling.
Since the kitchen became now a part of the living room, architects wanted to make sure it was not dominating the entire space. To archive an impression of an easy flow and simplicity they designed lower cabinets in a smoked oak color and suspended cabinets in soft gray. The kitchen counter and a back splash were created using a natural stone. The fridge is hidden in a small den to avoid it to be visible from the living room that would disturb a simple and unifying look of the entire living room/kitchen open floor plan.
The apartment is fully furnished with originally created pieces, completing the minimal design. Danish made dark wood table and chairs are placed in center of the living room. A large bookshelf, designed by architects and made by local carpenters, and a soft color sofa are completing the arrangement of the living room.
Space that originally was designated for a bathroom was re-designed to make room for washer/dryer and water boiler. This addition helped to create a functional, simple, and clean arrangement.
Used materials have a very minimal look, with light and simple tiles across the floors and walls of the entire bathroom, including the shower space and toilet area. The only stronger accent used by designers is given by installing a wood cabinet with a stone counter top. A large mirror creates a specious feeling.
The parquet through the entire apartment was restored and brought back to its original beauty. Used light colors and rich natural light are contrasting with dark wood accents thoughtfully added to the design.
