Breathing life into centuries' old homes can be both exciting and challenging for any designer. Such was the opportunity put forth to Amalia Gal of Los Angeles-based Amalia Gal Interior Design, when her client approached her to renovate a 100-year old English Tudor revival in the heart of the city.

The home sits at a cozy 2,000 square feet and features three bedrooms, two
and a half bathrooms, a library and a charmingly unexpected sleeping porch. Gal's client, an LA native bachelor who had moved back to the area after living in NY for a decade, was keen to bring modern soul to the property while maintaining its architectural charm and integrity.

Gal worked closely with him every step of the way, encouraging him to embrace color and pattern, even when it felt outside of his immediate comfort zone.

The result is a breezy, laid back classic California style home with hints of 1970s touches, ensuring there is a moment of interest in each room without any design element feeling too on the nose. Gal achieved this through juxtaposing whites and natural fibers in fabric and furniture against her bold use of color and pattern in paint and wallcoverings.
