THE PROJECT: TURN A 300-SQUARE-FOOT APARTMENT INTO A SUSTAINABLE LIVING SPACE FOR A BUSY NYC PASTRY CHEF

The client wanted to modernize his space while retaining elements of its original 1920s style. This meant not only devising a design that brought a fresh taste and vision to a historic structure, but also navigating the strict New York City building codes governing historic buildings. Our team collaborated closely with the NYC DOB to ensure that the project was achievable. Then we creatively reconfigured the space using sustainable methods to create a contemporary, inviting home for the client.

DESIGNING A SOLUTION

To maximize the space’s potential, TNB chose a modern kitchen layout to emulate a loft apartment. This design opened up the kitchenette while adding a convenient eat-in area. Additionally, the existing brick wall was refinished and repurposed as a kitchen backsplash, effectively incorporating the building’s historic structure in service of a contemporary aesthetic.

THE RESULT

With the project, we were able to meet all the client’s needs within an extremely compact footprint, modernizing the space while retaining pieces of its historic style. Despite its modest size, the apartment includes all the essentials of a modern home, and in its small footprint embodies a perfect blend of functionality and eco-friendliness. Renovated using green materials and practices, the home stands as an example of urban sustainability and tiny home living.
